The Shield of the Pentity or Scutum Ichabod (Shield of Ichabod) is a visual symbol which expresses many aspects of the doctrine of the Pentity as found in the Principia Discordia, it summarizes "...Some Psycho-Metaphysics" (pg. 00049-00050) and the "Myth of Ichabod" (Principia Discordia first edition) in a compact diagram.

The word Pentity is derived from Latin Pentit, meaning "the number five, a Pentiad". This abstract noun is formed from the adjective pentus (five each, fivefold, pentuple), as the word unitas is the abstract noun formed from unus (one). Thus a Pentity is "a set of five" or "the number five".

The diagram consists of five "pebbles" (generally circular in shape) interconnected by eight links. The four pebbles at the edge of the diagram are labelled with the four concepts of the Pentity (traditionally the Latin-language names, or scribal abbreviations thereof): True ("VERA"), False ("FALSUS"), Order ("ORDO") and Disorder ("TURBA"). The pebble in the center of the diagram (within the square formed by the other four pebbles) is labelled Goddess (Latin "DEAE"), while the four links connecting the center pebble with the outer pebbles are labelled "is" (Latin "EST"), and the four links connecting the outer pebbles to each other are labelled "is not" (Latin "NON EST").

The Shield of Ichibod is not generally intended to be any kind of schematic diagram of the structure of Goddess Eris, but instead is merely a compact visual device from which the statements contained in or implied by the previous listed texts  can be read off.

Lou Si

A stunning and effective diagram, thanks. I can't help note that when I read 'Is Not' upside down, I see 'lou Si' and think of an imaginary ancient Oriental Goddess of slack! Cheers Yetikreuz.

Who knew?

I would never have guessed that another name for Goddess was Vera!
